Tarantismo: Italian Folk Magic, Ritual Dance & Music

Описание к видео Tarantismo: Italian Folk Magic, Ritual Dance & Music

Tarantismo is a Southern Italian tradition that many find mysterious. It is part of the greater practices of folk religion in Italy and involves ritual dancing or the Tarantella in association with Saint Paul. Ritual dress of white, red, black, yellow, or green, and rhythmic ceremonial music is part of the ceremony. Visions of snakes, scorpions, and spiders may also be experienced. It is widely known as an exorcism of the "venom of Arakne". People that undergo the ceremony are known as Tarantati, those that have been "bitten by Arakne", the spider-woman. Fantastic imagery is conjured in the art of Tarantismo on a physical and psychic level. Participants have wild visions and are sometimes known to become processed by Saint Paul, Lord of the Tarantismo. Saint Paul over time became a Christianized form of the god Dionysus.

Salento, Italy is seen as the center of the Tradition and June 29 is the day of the Tarantati, which is also the feast of Saint Paul.
