Michael Gove has named three organisations that could fall foul of the new definition of extremism, but insisted that the new rules would not hinder free speech.

The communities secretary said that the Muslim Association of Britain, which is associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, and the Islamic human rights groups Cage gave “rise to concern for their Islamist orientation and views”.

Gove said Mend, which promotes participation by British Muslims in voluntary bodies and institutions, was the third body from which the government could withdraw co-operation.

As part of the new definition of extremism, ministers will “name and shame” non-criminal groups barred from exerting influence over government policy.
