Retinitis pigmentosa is a disease that makes cells in the retina break down slowly over time, causing vision loss, the vast majority of the cases can never be cured but thanks to Argus II, patients with this disease have the opportunity to significantly improve their standard of living. If this novel technology is further explored and worldwide known, patients with other vision impairments may be able to improve their quality of life.


ABSTRACT

Retinitis pigmentosa is one of the 7000 pathologies considered rare diseases and it affects the retina (the light-sensitive layer of tissue in the back of the eye). The disease makes cells in the retina break down slowly over time, causing vision loss. It is a genetic and hereditary disease whose symptoms usually start in childhood and most people eventually lose most of their sight. 20 years ago the biomedical company Second Sight developed the first bionic eye called Argus II which is a retinal prosthesis system formed by a three-part device that allows some perception of light and motion to the patients who use it. A small electronic device is implanted on the patient’s retina by surgery. Subsequently, the patient wears a camera mounted on a pair of glasses, and a portable video-processing unit. Through the camera, images are captured, analyzed, and wirelessly transmitted to the implant in the patient's retina. The retina's live cells are stimulated by the implant, and the brain recognizes these patterns as light. This treatment is only for patients who have lack of sight or almost no vision due to a high percentage of the disease. Patients must do tests in order to assure that they don't have any physical problem that involves the implant operation. The patient gradually gains the ability to decipher the signals from the Argus II in order to perceive their surroundings, and — in some cases — even read large-print text. Argus II does not have a complete restore in the natural vision, the results are only in black and white and don't have a clear image detail.We hope that in the near future, the Argus II technology will be able to improve the lives of a greater range of patients.
