LE SSERAFIM (르세라핌) - Perfect Night (8-Bit, Sunsoft 5B)

An 8-bit rendition done by ear. Note: when I say Sunsoft 5B, that does not mean that this adaptation will be done in “Sunsoft style”. Instead it will use my established style from May 2023 onwards. I only use the audio capabilities of the Sunsoft 5B.

For all my excitement about the big move to Logic Pro, I must admit that I made a rather unfortunate discovery (and this late in the game, no less!) that the Nintendo Entertainment System was apparently never capable of stereo output.

I had considered making this a VRC6 cover, but chose Sunsoft 5B over that because of the three extra channels permanently stuck at 50% duty cycle. This soundscape helps stir up memories of the Christmas tree decoration that I have kept since childhood, which plays Christmas melodies using a single onboard buzzer. Hopefully my new computer doesn’t die while rendering all the volume changes.

The cowbells that come in at the beginning and end of the chorus were done using an 8 KB audio file playing through a “DPCM” channel, but I found the channel a little bit underused and the triangle kick drum a little weak. So I supplemented the triangle kick drum with the DPCM channel. Also, I was now able to use the MIDI volume automation so that the volume of the instruments themselves could be freely adjusted, and I took advantage of my new computer’s sampling capabilities to run pulse waves (or at least the ones that didn’t need to have their duty cycle changed mid-run) from samples. The (empty) bridge also features my attempt at emulating a human laugh using a pulse wave!

I had tried putting animations into the titlecard, but the resulting video only went up to 540p.

Edit: After listening to this a couple more times myself, I discovered that there was a pretty big mistake at the very end of the song. I can either let it be, or get back into Logic and update it. However, Logic is not rendering my square waves correctly, so I'll avoid using too many samples from here on out.

Sometimes errors seep through screening, and I apologise in advance if the audio is a bit off (read: way off).
