Things are looking good for Corky, a sea otter that was rehabilitated after being rescued in August 2015.

Vancouver Aquarium head veterinarian Dr. Martin Haulena says most of the air trapped in the layer under his skin (subcutaneous emphysema) is gone. Although Corky’s diving has greatly improved, Dr. Haulena says he still needs to gain some weight before he is released back into the ocean. Ultimately, this is a decision that will be made by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Corky was named for the way he was found floating at the surface near Vargas Island (north of Tofino). Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre staff, together with officers from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, rescued the badly injured adult. Corky’s rib was broken by blunt force trauma, possibly from a boat strike, which led to the collapse of a lung. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre.
