Today, we give you the most unconventional feats in music history… These records defied conventionalism and gained incredible success. They are the great underdogs that achieved greatness without glamour, and most don’t know their stories, but you’ll be amazed. Let’s get into our countdown of the 10 Strangest Musical Feats of the Rock Era. Starting with really the only well known feat of our countdown. The Travelin' Wilburys, the completely unplanned formation of a supergroup at #10.
The Traveling Wilburys didn’t set out to be a supergroup; it isn’t like 5 legends got squirrelly one night and thought, “hey, we should form a band together.” The plan had nothing to do with starting a “supergroup.” It began as a casual jam among friends, and the idea of turning it into a proper band grew out of that spontaneous session. As Tom Petty later put it, the main criterion for joining this “perfect little band” wasn’t fame or skill—it was simply “who you could hang out with.” It all came back to friendship, not ego, at the heart of the project.
Here’s how this incredible ensemble unfolded. It all began when George Harrison needed a new B-side for a European single from his Cloud Nine album, so he and co-producer Jeff Lynne decided to cut it together. Then came a “chance dinner,” that in itself was a historic gathering. That evening, Guitar George and ELO’s virtuoso Jeff Lynne, dined with Roy Orbison, and as the wine flowed, George invited him to join the recording session the very next day. Then, there was the ‘borrowed guitar.’ George swung by Tom Petty’s house to pick up a guitar and then had an epiphany to ask Tom to come aboard. Keep in mind, nothing was planned. Everything was done by the seat of their pants; you know…a situation where you’re just winging it, making decisions on the fly.
With no time to book a proper studio, the group ended up in Bob Dylan’s garage, turning a makeshift space into a recording studio. One by one, the five legends crowd into Dylan's garage, get to work, and crack out the track “Handle with Care,” a song title they got off a cardboard box in Dylan’s garage, which is where they recorded it. When they were finished, George took “Handle with Care” to the label, only to hear the executives say: "George… this is not a B-side.” “Handle with Care.” They were so blown away by the song that they felt it would be criminal not to use it for an album. It had the potential to be historic. The surprising enthusiasm for “Handle with Care” ignited a passion in the 5 legends they hadn’t felt since they were young, hungry musicians. So, they kept going, turning what was supposed to be a ‘one-off session’ into a full album. So they kept going, turning the one-off session into a full album— Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. It was Jeff Lynne who floated the idea of changing the name of the newly formed supergroup from The Trembling Wilburys
