25- Days of High Adventure Camping in the Northern Manitoba Wild - E.3 - Lightning Storm & Muskeg: A wicked thunder storm rolls in as we’re trying a bushcraft tarp set up at our backcountry campsite after a long day of canoeing and portaging up a remote river. The following day, we'd also need trail tape as well as map and compass navigation skills. We quickly unpack our dry bags and set up our tent just before the lightning storm is upon us. We're in the midst of setting up our tarp when the storm hits hard. The wind is whipping, pink lightning and loud thunderclaps are all around as it hammers rain, it was pretty crazy! Despite the rain, we managed to get a fire going and huddled under the tarp to cook our Walleye for dinner. It was late, we'd pushed extra hard this day, questing for the height-of-land and we were exhausted.

The following morning, Ted had to do some canoe repairs after discovering that the bow air pocket in Ted's canoe was full of water. It took some effort to locate the cracks that were allowing water to get in and we both were a little bewildered at how they'd got there when we found them. It takes a long time to fix the canoe and we get a late start.

Not long after that, we begin one of two height-of-land portages that day and soon find ourselves trudging through a seemingly never-ending stretch of deep muskeg as we bushwhack our way through a mosquito-infested waste towards a small pond on the height-of-land.
