NOTES: I know that my mic somehow switched off for a few minutes on the slide about AR. Not sure exactly what happened. The best I can figure is that it lost connection to my computer. Anyway, here's essentially what I was talking about from about the 50:16 mark to about 53:34:

Augmented reality is most commonly thought of as a way of enhancing advertising and also Pokemon Go, but can also be for unique storytelling experiences. The first example on this slide is from my good friend, Eric Torres who is a graphic designer. He created a card game called Bug Ruckus that utilizes AR as part of the gameplay. In this photo, you are seeing cards from his game displayed around the Phoenix Art Museum as part of an event. You would snap the QR code on the sign and an overlay of one of his bugs would pop up. The codes had been kind of strategically placed around the museum to illustrate the "real-world" habitats of the bugs. The second example is from a recent exhibition titled "Mapping Blackness" from a couple weeks ago at the MIX Center next door. It was a collaboration between Meteor Studios and Carla LynDale Bishop. The exhibition celebrated the historic Black community of the Okemah in south Phoenix. In this video clip, there is a photo of a house underneath the 3D modeled overlay. Using an app, you would hold your phone camera up to the photo and the overlay animation would appear, illustrating what that home might have looked like back then.
