Project: Mock betta habitat. I have Five female Betta fish(Females have better tolerance to other Females) in the half barrel so that I have more fish to fertilize the plants.

I chose the colour black mainly because the Betta are warm water fish so the black will retain more heat. Now the Betta do chase each other around but they don't harm each other so no worries there. Now, If I were to put two males in there they would eventually find and attack each other, but with the females, if two were together they would fight each other, but with the five of them, the Aggression is evenly spread out so the chance of attacking each other is low. what I'm trying to do here is to make a mock Rice paddies, as one place you can find them is in Thailand, where they live in between the rice crops.

Betta care: Betta fish need 2.5 gallons of water or more, those tiny cups pet shops have them in is inhumane and causes the fish to be stressed out. The shop workers may tell you to keep them in the tiny tanks, but never do that, most of them would just work at the store mainly because they love cats and dogs, but know nothing about fish.
People say that Betta fish live in tiny mud puddles and such, but that's because when ever there hasn't been any rain for weeks, their ponds turn into tiny puddles, and sometimes a Betta can get stuck in them. After a while the water in the puddle becomes very soiled and is a threat to their lives. So because of this, Bettas jump form puddle to puddle to save them selves.
Always clean your Betta water, just because they were found in mud puddles doesn't mean that they can survive with year old water. Yes betta fish are hardy fish, but that doesn't mean you should treat them like that.
Always decorate your tank, Your Betta can become bored and develop problems. Bettas can develop stress related dieses. If you're not sure if your Betta is happy, just look to see if he/she is always swimming around the tank and taking short breaks when ever. Now with some breeds they would be less active than the other because they have to haul around the extra weight but that doesn't their not happy. Remember, a happy betta is a healthy betta.
