Indigenous Tasmanian man Rulla Kelly-Mansell tells the story of how his cultural connection to country helped him to overcome mental health challenges.

Against a background of inter-generational trauma Rulla Kelly-Mansell attempted suicide. After recovering in hospital he made a decision to help others by speaking publicly to school groups, sporting groups and at charity events.

Returning home and visiting the wildlife sanctuary where he grew up has been key to maintaining his mental health. Rulla has also drawn on this strength to help him recover from cancer diagnosed in early 2020 just before the pandemic restricted access to travelling back to his country.
