Laser Treatment of Pigmented Birthmark in a Dark-Skinned Patient

Treatment of pigmented birthmarks in dark-skinned individuals can pose a challenging problem for many laser dermatologists. The reason behind this is as our pigment lasers destroy the pigment cells or melanocytes, patients with darker skin types (types V and VI) can develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in response, which confuses the clinical picture. In this patient, we were able to eradicate this extremely resistant birthmark after numerous treatment sessions of the Q-Switched Alexandrite laser.
