When most people leave a church, they just stop going. Jamin Coller couldn't do that. Leaving his church meant losing his job, his house, his vehicles, his lifelong friends, and his entire family. So he spent two years planning his escape.

Jamin grew up inside a fundamentalist world built by his own father. His dad, Dwayne Coller, was the piano-playing preacher in the 1973 Christian film "A Thief in the Night," the Rapture movie that terrified a generation and directly inspired Tim LaHaye's Left Behind series. His father wasn't acting. That character was who he was. By 25 he was running his own church with zero accountability and free reign to build his own version of extremist fundamentalism rooted in Bill Gothard's teachings.

Jamin was homeschooled from kindergarten through 11th grade. His graduating class had six kids. He memorized Bill Gothard's character cards by age seven. He attended Joshua Harris's "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" conferences. Fundamentalism from birth.

When he confessed at 22 that he had a girlfriend, his parents stripped them of their ministry titles and put them through eight months of intensive shaming and discipline. At the end, his father married them because that was the only way to fix what they had "defiled." The expectation after that was gratitude. Work harder. Give more. Commit 80 hours a week to the organization.

They had six children. Those children are what finally made Jamin and Wendy realize they had to get out. They could not raise kids inside that system. But people who left lost everything. Housing, vehicles, income, community. They had seen it happen to others. So they spent two years carefully planning their exit while still keeping up appearances.

In January 2020, Jamin told his family they were done. Three months later his parents informed him they'd spoken with their lawyer and he was no longer in their will. Every lifelong friend cut contact. Then his parents sent people into his new community to tell his new friends he was dangerous. They told him God had freed them from the obligation of considering him their son.
