Dust clouds, extreme heat, and no rain — our drought continues. Today, we deworm our Suffolk and Poll Dorset ewes to prepare them for breeding season.

The drought here at Ewetopia Farms is still gripping our land and our flock. In today’s sheep farming vlog, we move our newly shorn Suffolk and Poll Dorset ewes back to the main barn for an essential sheep health check before breeding season: deworming sheep. After a summer of grazing in extreme heat, humidity, and no rain, these breeding ewes weren’t in prime condition, likely due to a high parasite load.

Working sheep through the chutes in sweltering temperatures was a challenge for both shepherd and flock, but it had to be done to get them ready for breeding. Once treated, the ewes were put on an increased plane of nutrition to help them regain condition and prepare for healthy pregnancies.

We finish the day with evening sheep feeding — greeted by a barn full of hungry baaing voices. Join us as we manage sheep during drought conditions, prepare for breeding season, and handle the ongoing challenges of sheep farming in extreme weather.
