Between 1915 and 1970, approximately 6 million African Americans left their homes in the Southern United States and went in search of opportunity. Some moved West but the vast majority of them went to cities and towns in the North, changing the complexion and culture of the places they left behind and shaping the new places they would call home. And in modern times, many of these individuals or their descendants made the return to the places they once called home.
