In the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Xiahe County, there is the Labrang Monastery. "Labrang" is a variation of the Tibetan word "Lazang," which means the palace of Buddha and the residence of lamas. In 1709, the First Jamyang chose the location of Zhaxi Banner beside the Daxia River to establish his own residence, which gradually became the name of the temple. The scale of Labrang Monastery is second only to the Potala Palace. It has six major colleges, 48 Buddhist halls, the residences of the Living Buddhas (called "Angxian"), and more than 500 monastic compounds, making it one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug sect. The entire architectural complex is majestic, orderly, and well-arranged.
