This is my Orange Baboon Tarantula / OBT / Orange Bitey Thing (Pterinochilus Murinus)! This is a fast moving, defensive, terrestrial species from Africa. Their bite is quite potent & painful, handling is not recommended!

Scientific Name: Pterinochilus Murinus
Common Name: Orange Baboon Tarantula
Additional Names: OBT, Orange Bitey Thing, Mombasa Golden Starburst Tarantula, and Pterror Tarantula.
World Type: Old World
Zone: Terrestrial, burrowers.
Origin: Africa (see color forms list below for specific areas of Africa)
Size: 4 - 6 Inches
Growth Rate: Fast
Female Lifespan: 10 - 15 Years
Male Lifespan: 3 - 5 Years
Female Sexual Maturity: 2 - 3 Years
Male Sexual Maturity: 1.5 - 2 Years
Temperament: VERY DEFENSIVE!!!
Defense Mechanism: Very fast moving, PAINFUL BITES!
Venom: Medically Significant!
Movement Speed: Very Fast!
Handling: Not advised due to fast moving, very defensive, and their bite is medically significant and painful!
Webbing: Heavy Webber
Humidity Level: 50 - 60%
Temperature: 75 - 80
Most Active: Nocturnal
Wild Status: Not listed as endangered currently. (Updated: 10/21/25)

DCF - Dark Color Form - Botswana/Zimbabwe, Kenya, Kigoma, Mikumi.
OCF - Orange Color Form - Usambara Mountains Region (used to be called UMW before RCF was found)
RCF - Red Color Form - Usambara Mountains Region.
TCF - Typical Color Form - Kenya, Mozambique.
