Beauty 101: How to Colour Match Your Foundation

From ghost to Oompa Loompa, we’ve all had our fair share of foundation horror stories—and the never disappearing Facebook photos to prove it. To ensure this makeup mishap never happens again, our Official MECCA Beauty Junkies, Amy [  / mecca_amy  ] and Gin, [  / mecca_gin   ] are here to show you how to choose the right foundation from coverage to finish. They’ll also show you our tried and tested way to colour match your foundation to your skin tone for a flawless base every time. To begin, Amy narrows down Gin's skin type. Her skin's pretty normal but can get a bit dry through the t-zone.

Next up is coverage. Gin usually goes for something with a sheerer coverage, but today she's looking for a fuller coverage going out foundation. Amy narrows the choices down to the Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation (matte), NARS Sheer Glow Foundation (glowy), and Too Faced Born This Way (natural satin):

Gin chooses the Too Faced Born This Way as it's an in-between not too matte, not too glowy, natural satin finish.

Now onto the colour matching! Amy can see that Gin has a light to medium skin tone with warm undertones. She chooses three shades from the range that may be Gin's correct shade.

Amy swatches the shades on Gin's cheek going from the lightest shade to the darkest shade.

Process of elimination time. Amy can see straight away that the darkest shade is way too dark. She takes this shade off.

Gin chooses her winning shade out of the remaining two. After blending it out, we're happy with the shade chosen and Amy and applies this all over Gin's face.

To conceal, Amy applies the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer using an eyeshadow brush from the Too Faced Essential Teddy Bear Hair Brush Set:

Using the Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder, Amy sets Gin's foundation down using a NARS Mie Kabuki Face Brush:

To warm up the complexion the girls use the famous NARS Bronzer in 'Laguna' with the Urban Decay Contour Definition Brush:
