Digitalization and transformative technologies such as AI are constantly evolving and have the transformative potential to address the growing societal and environmental challenges. However, this potential is accompanied by risks that must be anticipated and mitigated through a clear human-centric approach to digital governance (prioritizing human needs and the public good), social solidarity (to foster trust and collaboration; address security and privacy concerns), and user empowerment (to balance innovation without stifling growth). The digital transformation must serve people and the planet. Giving digital citizens individual and collective control over personal data and their use is essential for strengthening people's sense of empowerment and self-determination worldwide. The nexus of well-known digital problems – cybersecurity, privacy, misinformation – need to be addressed in the interests of digital citizens.
