Compared to other well-known regions affected by World War II, the Nordic battleground has always remained relatively obscure.

In the early stages of the war, riding on the momentum of their conquest of Poland and preparing to sweep across Western Europe, the German forces decided to make a small but strategic move on resource-rich Norway. Their initial plan was to drive British and French forces out of Northern Europe with minimal effort, seizing control over the region’s mineral resources. Despite Norway’s declared neutrality, the Germans brazenly moved to occupy key cities and ports.

At that time, the Nordic countries were generally impoverished and militarily weak. Their armies were largely non-mechanized, with little heavy weaponry, and individual soldiers were modestly equipped. The Germans didn’t take these smaller armies seriously and, given the rugged terrain of Northern Europe that hindered large-scale mechanized advances, initially deployed only airborne and lightly armed ground forces to carry out their occupation plan.

What they hadn’t anticipated was Norway’s resistance. With support from British, French, Polish, and Belgian forces, and perhaps even drawing on the Viking-era sense of dominance over the southern lands, the Norwegians managed to push back the initial German light troops. This forced Germany to redirect parts of their air force, paratroopers, and elite ground troops—initially intended for the Western European campaign—to Norway. After a wave of intensive bombing, they reoccupied Norway. However, the retreat at Dunkirk and the rapid fall of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands meant that Norway lost the possibility of external support.

The film tells the story of this brief victory from the perspective of an ordinary Norwegian soldier and his wife.
