In this clip, Thomas nudges Édouard Mandon to unpack what SEPA actually is in practice, beyond the acronym everyone in fintech throws around. Édouard frames SEPA as both a regulation and a rulebook that every euro payment has to follow, across more than 40 countries.

Those SEPA rulebooks define everything from how you send and receive payments, to how rejections and returns are handled, to the exact data format that gets exchanged between banks and payment providers. Under the hood, that means ISO 20022 XML messages that look the same in France, Belgium, Austria or Italy. A SEPA transfer from Paris to Lyon and a transfer from Paris to Brussels are effectively identical. 💶

Before SEPA, it was messy. Each country and bank could use different formats, which forced payments to be translated as they crossed borders. Every translation step meant new intermediary banks, manual updates, more opportunities to break things and create exceptions, delays and extra fees.

SEPA did not remove the intermediaries, but it harmonised the language they use. For infrastructure companies like Numeral, that standardisation is the foundation for building cleaner, more reliable pipes on top of Europe’s payment networks. 🌍
