The role of SS SturmbannführerChristian Wirthin Aktion ReinhardtA non-commissioned officer during the First World War, Christian Wirth fought on theWestern Front. In1931, he joined the Naziparty and, whenHitlercame to power, became a member of the Württemberg police force.Then he took a strong hand in leading the Stuttgart Criminal Police (Kripo). At the end of 1939,having joined the T4 operation, he officiated at the euthanasiainstitute located in Grafeneck Castle. He was then appointed Administrative Director ofthe Euthanasia Institute in Brandenburgon the Havel. His efficiency and experience have earned him the appointment of Inspector General of all euthanasia institutes. At the end of December 1941 Viktor Brack sent him to Lublin in the General Government of Poland to report to the SS-Brigadeführer Odilo Globocnik, who appointed him commander (Lagerkommandant) of the Bełżec extermination centre. In early August 1942, Odilo Globocnik appointed him Inspector General of the extermination centres of Aktion Reinhardt (Bełżec, Sobibór, Treblinka) where up to 1400000 Jews died between1942 and 1943. At the end of 1943, ChristianWirth and his men were sent to Istria, innorth-easternItaly, in an area straddling the border with Yugoslavia. This intervention will highlight the key role played by Christian Wirth in the practical implementation of the Aktion Reinhardt.
