The Temple of Ramesses II at Karnak, located just inside the entrance of the great Karnak complex, was built as a small but richly decorated shrine honoring Amun and celebrating Ramesses II’s power.

Originally a free-standing temple, it now sits partly enclosed by later structures. Its façade once held two seated colossal statues of Ramesses II, and its walls are carved with scenes of the king offering to Amun, Mut, and Khonsu, as well as reliefs commemorating his Battle of Kadesh victories.

Although much smaller than his temples at Abu Simbel or the Ramesseum, this sanctuary is an important example of Ramesses II’s architectural footprint at Karnak and shows his desire to associate himself closely with the great Theban gods and the sacred precinct of Amun.
