"I'm Meg Kinnard, national politics reporter for the Associated Press. I'm in Iowa where the Associated Press has just determined that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has placed second in the Iowa Republican presidential caucuses. DeSantis has focused much of his presidential campaign on the Hawkeye state, moving a lot of his campaign infrastructure here, and a super PAC (political action committee) supporting his candidacy 'Never Back Down,' knocking on millions of doors to try to drum up support for him here in Iowa. From here, DeSantis plans to go straight to South Carolina, where he's aiming to focus his intent to challenge former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley in her home state. For months, DeSantis has been locked in a battle with Haley for the number two position here in Iowa. The campaign next, however, moves on to New Hampshire, where Haley has been perhaps better positioned than DeSantis, who hasn't spent as much time campaigning there."

STORYLINE:
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis finished in second place during the 2024 Iowa Republican presidential caucuses over former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley in the fierce fight to emerge as the clear alternative to former President Donald Trump.

The finish gives DeSantis a badly needed dose of momentum as the race moves to next-up New Hampshire, which votes in just eight days.

The second place finish for DeSantis, a 45-year-old governor whose campaign was thought all-but dead last summer after a series of missteps, marks the first major milestone of many that he will need to qualify for the general election ballot against Democratic President Joe Biden later this fall.

DeSantis has shaken up his campaign staff and recalibrated his message several times over the past year and has bet heavily on a strong Iowa finish.

He visited all 99 counties, aided by an aligned super PAC, Never Back Down, that spent the summer and fall sending organizers door to door to recruit supporters.

Haley’s team began organizing in Iowa much later and only last month received the endorsement of the political arm of the billionaire Koch Brothers’ Americans for Prosperity. That group helped with canvassing voters and organizing for Haley.
