North America By Train, Part 16: Manhattan Madness. What Would You Do In 36 Hours?

Hey, it's Gail and David! Join us as we circle Canada and the United States entirely by train. Starting in Winnipeg, we will take trains to Vancouver, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, New York City, Toronto and, finally, back to Winnipeg. Did we mention..entirely by train!

In Part Sixteen, Gail and I wander the streets and byways of Manhattan on foot. Our goal was to stay outdoors, explore the neighbourhoods and wander through glorious Central Park. We kept our museum visits to a minimum. After all, we had a mere 36 hours, one and a half days, to take in Gotham!.

However, we did feel it important to visit and spend time at the 9/11 Memorial, including the Memorial Pools and the 9/11 Museum. Both are humbling experiences but the museum, in particular, is deeply moving. We planned to spend an hour there but stayed a good part of the afternoon. And we could have stayed longer had the museum remained open into the evening.

On a lighter note, taking in one of the last performances of the 2023 Tony-winning musical, Kimberley Akimbo, was a highlight, trumped only by the evening's frenetic street life in the surrounding Theatre District and Times Square in the Midtown area.

Aside from those two indoor activities, the majority of our time was spent on foot. The first half day, after arriving by Amtrak's Acela train at noontime, was spent walking from our midtown hotel near the Moynihan Train Hall (Penn Station) down through Chelsea, West Village, along the Hudson River Greenway and into Tribeca and One World Trade Center.

The following day was devoted to walking and, although it rained non-stop all day and into the evening, it was a very atmospheric way to experience a great city. We started with a walk along the length of the Highline, abandoned elevated tracks that have been re-visioned as an elevated linear park. Starting at the new Whitney Museum in the Meatpacking district, it winds its way north between office and residential towers to the new Hudson Yards development. At the end is the rather posh Hudson Yards Shopping Mall, a good place to warm up with lunch and a coffee, one prepared by a robot inside the Muji shop.

Gail, being a Winnipeg keener and architectural historian, took us on a Metro ride to the Upper West side, around West 86th Street, to visit the Soldiers' and Sailors' monument. This conveniently led into a pleasant walk in the rain through Central Park back to midtown. Already dark by the time we arrived, we were once more mesmerized by the gridlock of pedestrian traffic as we wandered past the Apple Store, Rockefeller Center, the Chrysler Building and Grand Central Terminal.

A fitting end to 36 hours in Manhattan!
