Born in Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, Ustad Rashid Khan is the son of an established Sufi singer Shakhari Begum. He is also the grand nephew of Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan who taught him music in his early childhood. Ustad Rashid Khan lost his mother at a very early age. It was Pandit Ravi Kichlu who brought him to Sangit Research Academy where actually he carved his career in music.
