Generally, children hate their parents who seem to ignore their kids’ feelings and wishes. When you don’t find an adequate amount of affection through material happiness, you generally seem to go against your own loving parents. The only problem with them that we don’t seem to understand is how they come to keep the family intact and run without complaining much about ups and downs in their own life.
Especially, it’s difficult when you have to sustain life alone without your co-mate to look and take after your children. It becomes too difficult and challenging to make your children express the love and care you would have given if you had everything rich in life. Halitha Shameen written and directed Malayalam comedy-drama Aelay portrays a seemingly troubled relationship between father and son, Muthukuty and Parthi. Parthi who believes his father has always deceived him from receiving good opportunities tries to humiliate his father after the news of his father’s death. Going against his father and working in town Parthi reconciles more with the past and love to his father psychologically.
Parthi comes to realize the love and devotion of his father after he comes to know that he feels bad if anyone utters badly about his father after his death. When Parthi realizes that he unconsciously never hated his father rather he misses his father and tries to collect every belonging of his father in good condition. He even goes to clash with the party goer and Madhumati’s would-be the groom who takes his father’s ice-cream cooling basket. Parthi through the memory of his beloved and himself rejoicing in the romantic past comes to realize his father’s good views on others. He then delivers positive feelings towards his deceased father.
Parthi on realizing his undied love towards her unfurls his father’s history and the story shows us how his father concealed the reality for him as per the agreement made between son and father for not revealing each other’s secret. His father too regrets later on, on not being able to suggest to his would-be daughter-in-law how he was over drunk that day and could not tell her the truth. The absence of proper communication leads to the direst break up in the platonic love that even makes many of us nostalgic about our own teenage crushes.
The love commingles the different shades of class and caste conflict in a very smooth way. The true affection of Madhu towards Parthi as a daring boyfriend leaves her nowhere but to regret and elope with him at the end. The difficulty of keeping your love intact especially if you are from the low class too gets evident when the social media posts of Madhu get more discussed than their relationship. Madhu; a passionate dancer and social media user seem to pass Parthi’s social status on forgetting his absence over that social media.
The story not only reveals a father’s soft side and challenges to grow up his kids when he sustains on very basics by selling ice-cream on a bicycle. The challenges of not being able to fulfill his kids' wishes and desires made his own kids form bad ideas him but since the true causes always make one happy at heart, Muthukutty never seems dejected accept his incompetency to retain the love of his son in his teenage. The cunningness of his father turns out to be a surprising factor after Parthi realizes that it’s not his father rather the double of his father’s illegitimate brother.
How true love can be portrayed unstated and how the low-class family suffers from emotional intimacy reveals some of the facts of our society. To foster the love and care of the father, the troubles and sufferings remain unsaid as the masculinity rather conceals the societal suffering tries to emerge victorious over every challenge. The strong side of a loving father establishes the benign side of masculinity that brings the males strong hearts even during the harshest crisis. As the story connects the two suffering souls, beautiful Madhu makes falls in her decisive character at the end. Finally, we come to love her more when she shows her care for his father and him to connote the basic way of sharing our feelings in rural, authentic village life. The expression of innocent love expressed simply through the anger of not being talked and asked sorry for shows how love grows in the meadows of the far village secluded from the materialistic terms.
