Welcome to This Month in Math — October edition for First Grade families! This month, our young mathematicians are diving into two important areas:

Computation & Estimation – Students are working with addition and subtraction problems up to 10. They’ll practice solving problems by counting on and back, using the + and – symbols, and showing their thinking with pictures, models, or equations. They’ll also begin to understand that the equal sign means “both sides are the same.”

Number Sense – First graders are extending their counting skills by counting forward to 120 (starting from any number) and counting backward from 20. They’ll practice writing numbers 0–120 in and out of order, skip-counting by tens, and showing numbers with groups of tens and ones. Students will also describe numbers using tens and ones and explain their thinking with models or pictures.
