Hey guys this is Tom with SLR Tom and today I want to talk about the Netgear Nighthawk AC3000 AC1900 X6s router. But have you ever asked yourself what it is and why you need one. Look at this thing this is a router of monstrous proportions, currently costing about two hundred thirty dollars, it was three hundred dollars when it launched new.
Let me give you a brief overview of what routers are so:
Everyone needs a good router at home, it can mean a world of a difference between getting a good signal or good wi-fi as we’re used to saying, throughout your home or crappy dropping out connections in the bedroom, or won’t even reach your outside at all. Signal Quality issues are probably the most common but there are many other aspects that make a great Internet Router.
Let’s start the basics, what is a router: The router which we typically refer to, is actually four devices in one, we just typically refer to the thing as Router because it’s all in one box
First, it’s a device on your home or business network that manages your internet traffic, it forwards internet data packets between computer networks, it’s the device that you connect to your internet modem, that manages your home network, we typically call the entire
Second it is a network switch, typically with 4 ports, these are standard wired ports and this Netgear comes with super fast one gigabit ports
Third it has built in Wireless Access points, those are the antennas that give us the Wi-Fi signal, now the signal quality can vary greatly between all devices, and some like this Netgear can have even six or more antennas, they can have multiple radios that work in unison, think of it as a multi-lane highway for your Wi-Fi signal.
Fourth, it has a firewall built in and that can vary incredibly among different brands, with this one I think it’s kind of a weak point, don’t get me wrong you can do a lot, but at this price point I would expect better, firewall rules or options would help you setup things like content rating and filtering, so you don’t allow your kids to watch x rated movies, it does it very well, but it lacks the scheduling aspect I like, it’s more of a manual way of managing when kids have access, while what they have access to is pretty robust.
Let’s check this thing out, the Netflix or YouTube connections issues or traffic congestions caused by your home router will be a thing of the past with this router.
