KUALA LUMPUR: The World Press Freedom Day Forum 2023 has fostered robust dialogue among stakeholders in advocating the importance of reentering freedom of speech and media freedom as a driving force of human rights.

The forum held at the Institute of Broadcasting and Information Tun Abdul Razak with the theme of "Freedom of Expression as a Driver for All Other Human Rights" kicked off with a high-level panel discussion aimed to engage diverse stakeholders.

The discussion was moderated by Astro Awani senior editor Melisa Idris and joined by Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil along with United Nations resident coordinator for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, Karima El Korri, Centre for Independent Journalism executive director Wathshlah Naidu and the Kingdom of the Netherlands Embassy in Malaysia deputy head of mission Eva Oskam.

The event continued with two sessions entitled "Reflecting on Media Environment: Connecting Past and Present", and "The Crucial Role of a Malaysian Media Council", which touched on the evolving nature of media and its impact on freedom of expression in the country, as well as the significance of establishing a dedicated Malaysian Media Council.

The second part of the forum resumed with four closed-door parallel roundtable discussions involving topics affecting journalists and the media landscape, which was also attended by the New Straits Times Associate Editor (Content and Digital) Najmuddin Najib and Berita Harian deputy group editor M. Thillinadan.

The forum, held to commemorate the World Press Freedom Day 2023, was attended by more than 150 people from diverse backgrounds, ranging from government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, the media fraternity, youth, community leaders, academia and civil society organisations.
