Russia has been recruiting Zimbabweans and other African nationals to fight in Ukraine, often through deceptive means. Ukraine's foreign minister stated that at least 1,400 citizens from 36 African countries, including Zimbabwe, are fighting with Russian forces, with most being sent to the front lines where casualty rates are high.

Many individuals are reportedly lured by promises of lucrative jobs, high salaries (e.g., $2,200 - $4,500 per month), or Russian passports for themselves and their families. Some African students and workers already in Russia have reportedly been coerced into military service under threat of having their visas revoked or facing deportation.

Ukrainian officials warn that the contracts offered are "equivalent to a death sentence," as many of the recruited foreigners are quickly deployed in "meat assaults" and killed within a short time.

It is alleged that poverty is a key factor pushing some Zimbabweans and other Africans, particularly those staying in South Africa, to accept these risky offers.

The Zimbabwean government has not made an official statement specifically about its citizens fighting, but the Russian embassy in Zimbabwe has defended its programs as legitimate educational and work opportunities, denying any inhumane activities. In contrast, the South African government is investigating cases involving its citizens and has warned nationals against falling victim to such recruitment schemes.

There are separate reports of Russia seeking Zimbabwean citizens for construction work to address labor shortages, which is a different issue but highlights ongoing engagement between the two countries regarding labor supply.

African governments and citizens are being urged to be cautious of job and study opportunities in Russia that could be a front for military recruitment.
