Owen Nathaniel Vick - Stillborn But STILL BORN

The death of a child at birth or just before (often at full-term) is devastating, unexpected, and completely life-shattering. Our Co-Director of Communications, Ana Lepe Vick ( connect on IG:   / stillmyson   ), shares the story of the death of their beloved second child, first son, Owen Nathaniel Vick, in hopes that this will help prevent future losses by breaking the stigma of silence surrounding stillbirth and informing families of the real risks they face, even in a "textbook", "perfect", "normal" pregnancy like hers was. Although she went to the ER upon noticing a lack of movement in the middle of the night at just over 31 weeks of pregnancy, the response of the hospital wasn't urgent enough and traumatically after being suddenly, without warning, rushed into a crash c-section to deliver her baby as his heart rate was rapidly plummeting, he did not make it. Her family will always be missing 1, though they carry Owen in their hearts and his memory serves as her inspiration to help save babies in his honor.

Stillbirth occurs in 1/160 pregnancies and to the family that is that unlucky 1, that death means a lifetime without your child, which drastically changes your future forever. By sharing our stories and opening up about the trauma of our babies' deaths, we believe we can better prepare families to understand the seriousness of stillbirth and as a community come together to improve our broken system that has failed far too many of us.
