The spleen is a fist-sized organ in the upper left abdomen, part of your lymphatic system, that filters blood, removes old red blood cells, stores blood cells, and produces infection-fighting lymphocytes (white blood cells). It acts as a blood filter, destroying old cells and germs, and as an immune organ, generating antibodies to fight infections, though you can live without it.
Location & Structure
Location: Upper left abdomen, under the ribs, near the stomach and diaphragm.
Structure: A soft, spongy organ with two main tissues: white pulp (immune function) and red pulp (filtering blood).


Key Functions
Blood Filtration: Removes old, damaged red blood cells and cellular waste from the blood.
Immune Response: Produces white blood cells (lymphocytes) and antibodies to fight infections.
Blood Storage: Stores blood cells, including platelets and red blood cells, for release when needed.
Spleen Problems & Removal


Enlargement (Splenomegaly): Can occur due to infections or diseases like leukemia, causing fullness or pain.
Splenectomy: Surgical removal is possible as the liver and lymph nodes take over many functions, but increases the risk of certain infections, requiring vaccinations.
