From the first day of Operation Barbarossa, the fate of the Soviet prisoners was sealed. They would not be treated as combatants, but as ideological and racial enemies. They were ej3cuted en masse, marched to collapse, left to die of hunger, and used as disposable labor. The German orders were clear: no medical assistance, no shelter, no mercy. Even the female combatants were not exempt from exterm1nation.
Why was the treatment of these prisoners so different from that received by the British or the Americans? What role did Nazi ideology play in this policy of extermination? And why, after surviving captivity, were many imprisoned again by their own country?
