"This is an app so that anyone that has got a smartphone can find confession, can find Mass as easily, as quickly as a touch of a button on their smartphone. Simple as that.”

"If you’re in a city like New York or Edinburgh or London, it is going to tell you where the nearest Catholic Church is. In principle, we hope when we have got all the right information that it will tell people when they are hearing confessions, when there is going to be Mass. We are hoping that it is going to be able to present eventually a little news feed as well. So we’re building it with all sorts of options that we can build on to later on.”

"So many of our young people are using mobile devices all the time. I believe up to a couple of hours every day. So this is just bringing our faith and the church into line with current interests for our young people. So it means that they’ll have access to Mass times to confession times at the touch of their fingertips. So it is really quite exciting for us.”

STORYLINE:
The Archbishop of St. Andrews and Edinburgh launched a new app in the Vatican on Tuesday intended to help Catholics around the world find the nearest Catholic church with just a few taps on their smartphones.
Archbishop Cushley said that now the faithful will be able to find a place to confess or attend Mass anywhere in the world using what they call “The Catholic App".
The archbishop was accompanied by Lisamaria Purdie, a primary school headteacher from Scotland, who said that the app was bringing "the church into line with current interests for our young people".
Developed in cooperation with a Scottish technology company, the GPS-powered app is designed to direct users to the nearest Holy Mass or place of confession.
