The Samsung Galaxy X, as it is rumoured, will have a touchscreen that genuinely folds along the middle without creasing, cracking, distorting the image, or any other negative results. The rumours coming out of Asia are seriously robust, "Project Valley" as it's known internally, is poised to emerge as the Samsung Galaxy X some time inside 2017, though no-one seems to know exactly when. The Galaxy X will reportedly feature a clamshell, flip-phone like design to allow it to fold up into a compact, pocket-friendly package without compromising the full-size, high-resolution Super AMOLED touch display.

However, as of October 18 there is cause for concern for anyone eagerly anticipating the Galaxy X and its innovative new design. Unless you've been living in a cave for the last few months you're sure to have noticed Samsung's bad luck with the Galaxy Note 7 - the handset has been axed due to a manufacturing defect which caused the battery to explode in some incidents.

Following a mass recall, it emerged the replacement units deemed "safe" were anything but, and were also prone to bursting into flames. So, Samsung has killed the Note 7, discontinuing it from sale and taking a massive hit to its bottom line, as well as its reputation. Currently there is talk of a $5bn hit to Samsung's cashflow over the next few quarters, the alleged abandonment of the Note brand by Samsung(though merely a re-branding process; stylus equipped phablets are expected to return to Samsung's portfolio at some point), and a potential mass migration of disillusioned customers over to Apple. Considering the year started on a high of Galaxy S7 sales this is quite a fall from grace.

Samsung has reportedly filed a patent with the Korean Intellectual Property Office for a smartphone that can be folded in half and is expected to arrive next year.

“Called the Galaxy X, the front of the smartphone will sport traditional Samsung home button in between a back button on the right and a menu button on the left,” GSMArena reported on Friday.

Samsung has been working on foldable displays for years is now ready to officially unveil its first offering in 2017.
