Since recreational cannabis is now legal in many places in the United States, you might wonder: is there any benefit to getting a medical marijuana card? For 26-year-old Kiana Green, there was.

"When I first started, it was definitely recreational," she said. "It wasn't until I actually hit some health issues that I realized that cannabis was an amazing tool."

During her teenage years, Kiana started experiencing severe pain from an unknown illness. It affected her moods and menstrual cycle, but doctors couldn’t pinpoint the problem. She sought medical advice and tried to manage on her own, but over time her symptoms worsened.

"Nothing was giving me any sort of relief or help," Kiana said. "It's no surprise, honestly, that most women go through severe pain when it comes to premenstrual cycling. That's just becoming more of a commonplace thing: experiencing severe symptoms that are actually not a normal thing, something that's not commonplace."

Kiana decided to take her health into her own hands, and that’s when she started looking into medical marijuana. Though she’d always used the plant recreationally, Kiana realized that cannabis could be a helpful tool on her medical journey as well.

Kiana applied for and received her medical card through Medly, a cannabis brand based in New York. Right away, Kiana said she noticed a difference.

"It's so many symptoms at once that it relieves. Depression, mood swings, the stress and anxiety from experiencing pain," she said. "Not to say they all just go away, but it's definitely a tool that's always in my pocket. It's made such a difference from where I was before to where I am now."
