According to a World Bank report, the world's old age population is estimated to double by 2050. In Pakistan, 9.4 million people are aged 60 and above, and their capability to cope with the rapidly changing socio-economic urban environment is also diminishing. Cities in Pakistan do not have a facilitating social infrastructure for their senior citizens, and unique challenges associated with urban lifestyles are emerging in healthcare and social inclusion.
There is a need to make cities inclusive for people of all ages and capabilities. Senior citizens are often excluded from mainstream society due to their special needs; however, it is essential to reintegrate senior citizens in modern urban places to create a healthy, more inclusive, and sustainable society.
Recently, the Federal Government has passed a bill that allows residents 60 years and above to get cards that will entitle them to concessions in medical and dental services and help in getting medicines at subsidised rates.
