Following on from the 'resting' training I recorded a few days ago, I'm back training with Izzy's female puppy (purple collar) and this time I've moved her training mat/bed into the shade.
I'm using a different mat so the puppy can work with more than just one training mat. The puppy is less 'jumpy' than she was just a week ago - persistent training pays off.

This gorgeous girl is more happy to 'sit' than 'lay down' to rest on her training mat, I think she prefers to be at a height and posture that allows her to continue to watch me. She's much more attentive to my body movements than her brothers. (you can watch their videos on youtube too)
I'm trying to encourage her to 'lay down' by putting my hand & treat on the mat, and sometimes dropping her treat onto the mat between her paws.

The puppies all have a lead clipped to their collar so they get used to having a lead on while they're resting. In reality if we were at a cafe, the lead would be clipped to the table leg or some stable structure - so there's no chance of them running away while out in public. But for now the lead isn't tethered - I want the puppies to have the self-control & ability to CHOOSE to stay on the mat before I need to introduce tethering.

Because Izzy's female puppy is SO focused on me and what I do, I introduce handing the paperwork I have with me to show her that I can do things which DON'T affect her - she doesn't need to touch the paperwork, it's 'nothing' to her... I can move around and handle things without it meaning she has to respond. This is harder for a puppy who is so focused on me, my body language, hand gestures etc.
She's a very intuitive, responsive girl. Thankfully she responds well to spending some alone time in her crate and that's where she seems to rest best.

You can see I move around, move away and come back to the seat and she chooses to stay on the training mat. This is wonderful progress. Towards the end of the training session I'm being 'boring' hoping that she will choose to lay down on the mat. You can see the puppy repositions herself a few times, her left leg comes slightly forward which is what she sometimes does before laying down, so putting the treat close to the ground is hopefully letting her know that laying down is rewarding.
