The Palghat Gap has historically served as a vital entry point into Kerala, facilitating road and rail transportation between Coimbatore and Palakkad.
It formed as continental shelves shifted when Australia and Africa separated from Gondwana. India and Madagascar were once joined until volcanic activity created a similar gap, the Ranotsara Gap in Madagascar.
The Palghat Gap, a geological shear zone, runs east to west and is a weak point in the Earth's crust, causing occasional tremors in Coimbatore.
Northern Western Ghats get more annual rain, while the south receives even rainfall year-round.
This region is home to more than 450 tree species, including ancient species like Magnolia champaca (Champa; Tamil: Sambagan), which have thrived for over 130 million years.
