This was my second visit to the iconic Ottobar venue. My first go-round, I arrived to see Thursday with Anthony Green. I didn't get to record because I miscalculated what I thought to be a great spot which eventually became a bad one.

In theory, the "balcony" seats overlooking the crowd had a great view but recording-wise, it wasn't as good. This spot had metal barriers which prevented one from getting that perfect camera view. Even sticking my phone out beyond would risk losing it to the crowd below via a quick slip. When all possibilities to salvage a video shoot didn't materialize, I just enjoyed the show from this amazing view. I did scan the venue to find future spots to shoot.

I shot this video from the far right wall on the raised steps at a slight angle. This worked out great but there's a column which splits the stage and have to take in consideration when shooting. Luckily, the singers from all bands were mobile and I just tracked them throughout the stage.

I needed to stay off the floor because I didn't want to get caught by stage divers and crowd surfers. And let's not get started with all the jostling that occurred which would have resulted in some jerky camera shots due to being pushed around! I avoided all of this by staying above it, which I accomplished.

If there was one gripe, it was that there was a steady cast of people moving in front of and beside me. No one stayed in their spot for the whole night. If they were shorter than me, I wouldn't have minded, but most of them were taller and had to tap them on the shoulder to ask if they could move to their right in order for me to capture the shot between them. I even asked one guy to step up a level beside me (an even better view) just so I wouldn't record his head throughout my shots!

Luckily, this round-robin movement of different audience members settled and I took this opportunity to shoot away. This (and three other videos) are the end result of that.

Sound-wise, I couldn't be happier. At my distance, I was able to record sound from the P.A. speakers mounted above the stage. They were loud enough for me to get the soundboard mix.

I shot this show with my iPhone in its SmallRig cage, larger Shure mic (MV88+) attached via cold shoe mount with my portable MagSafe charger strapped via velcro straps so I wouldn't lose it (it happened during my Peter Hook video so I learned from that lesson). I pulled out the heavy duty shit because I needed to keep my phone juiced to record four acts and the nature of the show required my phone needing to be protected. Mission accomplished...

Ray admitted his voice was shot but because YOT's music centered around a lot of sing-alongs and anthemic call-outs, it worked out perfectly. He enlisted the audience to participate in singing and we responded in kind. Hearing him speak sounded painful but he was a trooper throughout the whole set. You have to admire Ray for committing to the cause and pushing through his obstacles.

I enjoyed Ray's banter between songs, especially the anecdotal ones. His positivity has remained steadfast while aging and I didn't expect anything less. The two points which stood out were of he and Porcell asking Sammy's mom if they could take him on the road for their first tour and Porcell's Johnny Rotten story when Shelter opened for The Sex Pistol's "Filthy Lucre" tour. Porcell's impersonation of Johnny Rotten was spot-on, considering I had finished watching Danny Boyle's Hulu series!

The night was a stream of YOT's best songs. When Ray mentioned Kevin Seconds as one of his biggest influences, it launched the band into playing "Young 'Til I Die." This was followed by "Anarchy in the UK, " in which the place went nuts. One more song finished their 50+ minute set and the night had come to an end. What an incredible evening in Baltimore, Maryland!
