Walt Disney had a deep desire to keep Disneyland immaculately clean—and it all started with a simple observation: how far would someone walk with trash before dropping it on the ground? He determined that the average guest would only carry garbage for about 30 feet before looking for a place to toss it.

That became the golden rule. If you’ve ever walked through Disneyland, you’ll notice garbage cans placed no more than 30 feet apart.

Walt also wanted garbage cans that blended into the magic. That led to the creation of custom-designed push-top trash cans, a design Disneyland originated. These “Push” cans were built to hide the garbage from sight and keep smells contained. Over time, they became part of Disney’s signature look.

And then came “Push,” the walking, talking garbage can. Introduced in the 1990s in Tomorrowland, Push was a remote-controlled robot that interacted with guests, cracked jokes, danced, and played along with the crowd. At first glance, Push looked like just another trash can, but they moved, talked, and even had a sense of humor. Push quickly became a fan favorite, and isn’t at Disneyland anymore, but I did meet Push at Hong Kong Disneyland!
