The Honky Tonk BBQ, Sunday March 8th, 2020. To entertain in the interval, while the Chicago Cellar Boys could enjoy a well-deserved break, the guests were taken on an exciting trip into the world of ragtime piano, here finely/ excellently executed by Mademoiselle Hope Arthur. Incidentally, what better way to celebrate the International Women's Day! Around 1900 ragtime piano became a real craze in the musical world in the US with Missouri as its hub. Most often we link early ragtime piano with male composers&pianists, such as Thomas Turpin, Scott Joplin, James Scott, Charles Lamb just to mention a few, who made a living from their music. But in those days, when a piano almost was part and parcel of every home, at least those that could afford such an investment, also women came to learn to play the piano. Since the market flooded with compositions of this catching new genre, it was quite natural that amateur female piano players got caught up in the new craze. One has to remember this was before the radio-era. So all music and entertainment was live! Watching and listening to Hope was like flying back to the turn of the century 1900!
