Growing up Christian, one of the most famous sayings I used to hear was: “Jesus talked about hell more than anyone else in the Bible.” I heard this from pastors, people in church, and when I would read my English translation of the Bible.

Eventually, I learned that the NT scriptures were not written in English and that Jesus never spoke English. I discovered that the NT scriptures were written in Greek, 40-70 years after Jesus lived, and a translation of what he supposedly said in Aramaic. After learning this, I was encouraged to do a study beyond the modern English translation of the Bible that I was reading and beyond what my pastor was preaching every Sunday.

After doing this study, I was amazed to find that Jesus NEVER taught about hell. Believe it or not, Jesus never mentioned “hell.” He mentioned “Gehenna” along with sayings like “where their worm never dies and the fire is never quenched” and “where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Gehenna was a literal place outside of the city of Jerusalem that had a horrific past in Jewish history, and these sayings mentioned in the gospels are actually direct quotes from the Hebrew Bible (Isaiah 66:24, Job 16:9). These sayings (there are more) are never used to mean eternal conscious torment in the afterlife (hell).

In this video, I pose the argument that the only “hell” (eternal conscious torment in the afterlife) we find in the Bible, especially the teachings of Jesus, is our preconceived notion of hell (influenced by pagan mythology and Dante’s Inferno) that we impose onto the text and then use those text to support our preconceived notions.

I believe that when we shift from eisegesis to exegesis, the truth is clear: Jesus NEVER taught about hell.
