During my time as a horticulture student, I spent a semester in the UK. We had many garden pilgrimages, including Rousham. The Rousham gardens made a mark on me like no other. 10 years later I revisited this magical place and found it even more impactful than before. It's a nearly transcendent experience. I encourage anyone to make the pilgrimage to this garden if they are inspired by nature, design, and mythology.

The Rousham gardens are the work of renowned landscape architect William Kent (1685-1748). He was known for breaking the mould of the formal gardens of his time. Instead of separating the house, gardens, and countryside, Kent had a way of marrying them all together as if existing on one canvas. He had a delicate but profound touch. Experiencing one of his gardens is like walking through a 3D painting. It's no surprise that he was also a painter. Light and shadow, verdant hues, meandering lines, and mythological spirits all come together to create something more revelatory than the sum of its parts.
