First just to give you an idea of what I do on a regular basis. After completing a site for a client, I usually approach clients later and offer additional services. Social Media optimization and SEO are a huge portion of my ‘post site construction’ proposals.

I see many automating because they learn it from those who have had great success.

Automation has gotten quite popular in recent years with all the new self-help tech books. With how tempting the lure of having robots doing all your work can be, one must be careful to take a step back and ask, "is this a task that needs to be automated?” We could all benefit from optimization, and we all have areas of life that may be automated too much. If a system is more efficient, yet ineffective, the described system is just increasing ineffectiveness.

Automation is less flexible. Robots are not as adaptive as humans. I have a client who sends one email blast every few years, yet is obsessed with automating his mass emails.

Should We Automate?

Most people will Google how to build better automate and find themselves in a site which is managed by tech giants like GoDaddy or Bluehost. It’s important to know that a marketing strategy for a business like GoDaddy may be substantially different than a marketing strategy for a ‘mom-and-pops’ restaurant, small law firm, or artisan. This disconnect often causes small business owners to go all in with a strategy which was designed for a different business model.
