“The block that never was.”

Saturday September 27, 2014 marked the final broadcast for Vortexx, a short lived Sat AM block on The CW. Instead of the usual split end credits where the promos for the shows on the block would normally aired, the Vortexx logo sat in front on center on top of the credits accompanied by this theme, Playrock2 by Darrell Brown.

The block originally launched on August 25, 2012 replacing The CW4Kids which was programmed by 4Kids Entertainment. It barely made it through its 2-year lifespan, which due to low ratings (reruns are a factor here) it was announced in May 2014 that it would be replaced by Litton Entertainment (now Hearst Media Production Group) programmed “One Magnificent Morning” which bowed on October 4, 2014.

I was there from the start and the last broadcast of this block, which was the last action-oriented Saturday Morning block of its kind. Although NBC Kids continued until another 2 years as the last broadcaster to air children’s animated programming fare.

Vortexx started out great before it spun itself out of control with bringing back reruns of past shows like “Sonic X” or “The Spectacular Spider-Man” despite the fact that no one asked for the former to return despite being off air for a few weeks during the change of ownership in the Summer of 2012, which is kinda the reason why Vortexx failed to mimic the success of Saban’s heyday at Fox Kids during the majority of the 1990’s. To make matters worse, “Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy” was taken off the schedule in January 2013, months after it launched for whatever reason, from what I remembered, a lot of people on Facebook wanted it to come back, the block’s response was “watch it now on Hulu” instead of listening to their viewers, I’d asked myself then why pay for a subscription service if we could watch it on broadcast TV. Even WWE Saturday Morning SLAM was tapped out after 1 season.

Honestly Saban paid for a block that only lasted a year and it was a waste of an investment. I could imagine network executives questioning why they bothered to sell it to them in the first place if they’re not gonna improve the quality of their product on air.
