Achaval Ferrer was born in 1999 from the shared dream of a group of friends who wanted to show the world that Mendoza could – and can very well – produce world-class wines. The combination of different elements such as the quality of its soils, the altitude, the contrast between daytime and nighttime temperature, the poor soil composition, as well as the age of many of the vines, made Mendoza not only a region where wine could be produced, but wine of exceptional quality and character could be made. On another level, as we mentioned recently, Mendoza is extensive and there are great variations of soil composition as well as altitude in the different sub regions, which gives very distinct expression in the wines.

In this video, Santiago Achaval Becú, co-owner and winemaker at Achaval Ferrer, comments on the current 2014 harvest as well as what is it that makes malbec so special in Argentina. For Santiago, it’s the variety's capacity to adapt to different terroirs as well as its transparency when communicating the land into the wine. It does not impose in any way the character of malbec, the grape; rather, it works as an intermediary between the terroir and the consumer.
