花言葉は華麗、気品、移り気。
ナポレオン・ボナパルトの妃ジョセフィーヌは、マルメゾン宮殿の庭にダリアを植え、自分の花と
宣言した。そして国外へ持ち出すことを禁じた。ところがポーランドの貴族が庭師を買収し、
この花の球根を手に入れた。やがてポーランドにもダリアが咲き誇った。このことを知った
ジョセフィーヌは激怒し、ダリアの栽培を一切やめてしまったというエピソードがある。
「移り気」の花言葉は、花をポーランドの貴族に盗まれたジョセフィーヌ妃が、ダリアに興味を
失ったことからつけられたとされている。

Napoleon Bonaparte's wife Josephine planted dahlias in the garden of the Palace of Malmaison and declared them her own flower. She then forbade them from being taken out of the country. However, a Polish nobleman bribed the gardener and obtained the flower's bulbs. Before long, dahlias were blooming in full bloom in Poland as well. When Josephine found out about this, she was furious and stopped cultivating dahlias altogether. It is said that the flower's meaning of "fickleness" was given to the flower after Queen Josephine lost interest in dahlias after her flowers were stolen by a Polish nobleman.
