How do you calculate the partial voltages for a series connection? How can the voltage divider rule be derived? When does the voltage divider not work? What is the difference between the load-free and the load-bearing voltage divider? In this video I answer all these questions for you. Also, I will show you an exercise for voltage division at a potentiometer.


In the previous videos on Kirchhoff's rules we have already discussed the node rule, the loop rule and the current divider. And in this video we will now take a look at the voltage divider, which is a direct consequence of Kirchhoff's second rule. With the voltage divider you can calculate how a total voltage is divided into several partial voltages, depending on the resistance values of the components across which the total voltage drops.
