The truth about African-American heritage might surprise you.
While Yoruba, Igbo, and Akan are often cited as the main ancestral roots of Black Americans, the real story is far more complex.
African-Americans aren’t tied to one origin — they’re a blend of many African and non-African lineages, shaped by centuries of migration, intermixing, and history.
🧬 On average, African-Americans carry about 25% non-African DNA, mostly European. But what about the African connection?
To find the closest genetic match, scientists studied African populations with similar levels of Eurasian ancestry — and found the Fani people, nomadic herders from Sudan to Sagal, to be strikingly close.
In particular, the Fani of Burkina Faso and Guinea share genetic similarities that make them one of the closest living relatives to African-Americans.
It’s a powerful reminder that our roots run deeper and wider than any single map can show.
African-Americans and the Fani share not just history — but genetic heritage.
